Term 4, Week 5

Hi parents,

What a fantastic day we had yesterday. Congratulations to the Year 4 children that received their First Holy Communion and a big thank you to all of you for organising the morning tea.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“Small things become great when done with love” unknown

PLD SPELLING SOUNDS

3a: ‘SILENT B’ - climb
3b: ‘BLE’ - tumble
4a: ‘EAR’ as “er” - research
4b: ‘Y’ as “I” - bicycle
5a: ‘ERY’ (the place where an act happened) - bakery
5b: ‘CIR’ (around) - circumference
6a: ‘ICLE’ and ‘ACLE’ – follicle, miracle

POSSUM WALK
Please let me know if your child will be participating in the possum walk. Also, the date has changed to Thursday 16th November. I hope this doesn’t cause any inconvenience.

HOME LEARNING
As the children have completed their Mental Maths, there is a slight change to the Maths homework. The children have been given 4 activities to be completed by the end of the week. We will go through the answers on Friday. Each activity has been explained and there are no new concepts, so they should be able to complete each task with minimal supervision.

DESIGN HUB
I have had to postpone the design hub for a week or 2 due to our assembly (next week) and a limited supply of materials. If you could bring in any recyclable items to the classroom, the Year 3’s will be greatly appreciative.

YEAR 3 ASSEMBLY
The year 3 assembly is scheduled for Friday Week 6. The children have been asked to come to school dressed up as rappers. Anything will suffice, but a hat on backwards or sideways will be required. Please note that the children will need to change into their sports uniform after the assembly.

I am also hoping that each child will have a magnifying glass. If you have one at home, please send it to school with your child’s name clearly marked.

LITERACY FOCUS
This week, our reading focus is ‘inferring’. When readers make inferences, they are a bit like detectives gathering logical clues to piece together the solution to the mystery.

The students will begin to write the draft copies of their narratives this week. We will be using the senses to help us describe the setting and the ‘steal’ technique to help us describe the main character.

NUMERACY FOCUS
This week, the students will be reviewing ‘time’. As mentioned at the beginning of the year, time is quite a difficult concept for the children to master. It would be great to focus on time in the home this week as well. Whenever you get the chance, ask your child what the time is and guide them through the process. Those children that have mastered time, will be working on elapsed time.

 HOME LEARNING WEEK 5
The following tasks should be completed each night:

1.     Reading (readers) - 10mins
2.    Maths Activities – 1 section per night
3. Times Tables: Revise (x5)
4. Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check
The following tasks are only required to be completed once:

1.    Physical activity (includes team or club sport, dancing etc) - 15mins
2.    Teach your parents something you were taught at school.
3.    Tell the time at least once a day.
When a task has been completed, your child is required to tick it off in the diary.

Enjoy the week,

Mr. Jones

Term 4, Week 4

Hi parents,

What a great way to start the week with weather like this! Looks like the sun will be shining all week, so make sure you get your dose of vitamin D.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“Don’t let the shadows of yesterday spoil the sunshine of tomorrow” unknown

3a: ‘EA’ as in bread
3b: ‘ORE’ as in chore
4a: ‘G’ as “j” - engine

5b: ‘ENT’ as in obedient
6a: ‘SILENT N and P’ – column, pseudonym

FIRST COMMUNION HELPERS
Thank you to all the parents who have put their name down already. We are still in need of some parents to donate some time on the day. This will help with the preparation of the food (09:00 – 10:30), serving of the food (10:30 – 11:30) and cleaning (11:00 – 12:00). If you are able to help on the day, please put your name down ASAP. Remember, the favour is repaid next year when your children are receiving the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

HOME LEARNING
As the children have completed their Mental Maths, there is a slight change to the Maths homework. The children have been given 4 activities to be completed by the end of the week. Each activity has been explained and there are no new concepts, so they should be able to complete each task with minimal supervision.

DESIGN HUB
The Year 3 Design Hub will be up and running next week. If you could save any suitable building materials from the recycling bin and drop them into the class, that would be great!

YEAR 3 ASSEMBLY
The year 3 assembly is scheduled for Friday Week 6. Hopefully, many of you will be able to make it on the day. I will let you all know if anything is needed from home.

LITERACY FOCUS
This week, our reading focus is ‘making connections’. Making connections is when readers make connections between:
1.    Text-to-self
2.    Text-to-text
3.    Text-to-world
When readers connect a text to something they know or have experienced, they can understand it better.

The students will begin to plan their own narratives this week.

NUMERACY FOCUS
This week, the students will be learning about ‘grids and maps’.
